"DEATH FROM COLD AND NEGLECT.—On Wednesday an inquest was held at Combs, before F. B. Marriott, Esq., Coroner, on the body of Emma Death, aged 19.—The evidence was very voluminous; but the principal facts appeared to be that deceased lived with a man named Jacob Diaper, and she was the illegitimate daughter of his first wife. Deceased went to work in the fields a week before, but was taken very ill, and was obliged to go home very much against her wish, as she told a witness she could earn no money, and her mother would scold her. She continued to get worse, and on Sunday expressed a wish for some medicine, but Diaper said she would be all right in a day or two, and did not procure any. Matters kept getting worse until Monday night, when she gave an alarm, and was found to be struggling for breath and nearly suffocated. Diaper then went for Mr. Harling, and on his return the girl was dead.—Mr. Harling, in his evidence, stated that the body appeared to be in a healthy condition.—The Coroner then ordered an adjournment of the inquest for a post mortem examination. On resuming, Mr. Harling stated that the cause of death was a large abscess in the throat.—
The Jury returned the following verdict:—
'That the said Emma Death, on the 1st of May, died from ulceration and abscess of the throat, produced by a neglected cold; at the same time the Jury consider that Jacob Diaper, with whom the deceased lived is much to blame for not having obtained medical attendance for the deceased in proper time.'"
