Biography

Jacob may be the son of John Debord (b 1730 in Virginia), but the only proof I have is implied only. Jacob and John are living close to each other, and are of the right ages, but I have found no documents mentioning Jacob as John's son yet. This is a likely link, but not one that's proven, so I will leave it unlinked for now.

This is from a forum post by Hurshel Debord:

The two military land bounties in Missouri describe Joseph Deboard as heirs in law of Jacob Deboard and heirs in law of John Deboard; Joseph is NOT described as a son of either. So, these two records could possibly refer to the same Joseph Deboard. The land bounty records says John Deboard served in Michels Company (sic prob Capt Mitchell's Company) of the 10th Regiment Infantry and Jacob Deboard served in Clays Company of 10th Regiment Infantry.

Other military indexes and other sources says Jacob Debord enlisted for 5 years on 14 Oct 1813 in 10th US Infantry, Co Commander Capt Jos. Clay, Reg Commander Col James Wellborn. Jacob was present on roster roll for Capt Weeds Company on 31 Jan 1814 and 30 April 1814. He was listed as not present on roster roll at Camp Buffalo on 28 Feb 1815 and died at Camp Buffalo on 25 Jan 1815. John Debord enlisted 25 Jan 1813 in 10th US Infantry and was also present on muster rolls for Capt Weeds Company on 31 Jan and 30 Apr 1814.

I have not been able to find much info at all about the service of the 10th Infantry Regiment in the War of 1812. There is a military cemetery in Cheektowaga, Erie Co NY (just a few miles east of Buffalo) that lists the names of 7 soldiers that served in the 10th Regiment Infantry North Carolina. Most died of dysentry in 1815. The company names associated with these soldiers are Capt Brittain, Mitchell and Nelson. The cemetery was apparently located next to a major military hospital. 1790 Surry Co, NC Census: Lists Jacob Debord (DeBoard) with: 1 free white male over 16 1 free white male under 16 (must be Joseph b 1788) 2 free white females. From Register of Enlistment in US Army 1798 - May 17 1815, microfiche, D-E #233 Roll #4, Jacob Debord, #1677, private 10 US Inf. Co Commander Capt Jos. Clay, Reg Commander Col James Wellborn, Jacob enlisted 14 Oct 1813 for 5 yrs; present in Capt Weeds Co on Jan 31 and 30 April 1814. Not present on muster roll dated Camp Buffalo on 28 Feb 1815; died at Camp Buffalo on Jan 25 1815.

Bureau of Land Management - General Land Office Records http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/ Abstractof Warrant #16080 issued 1/4/1819 in (Carroll) Co MO: Joseph Deboard & the other heirs at law of Jacob Deboard decd late a private in Clays Company 10th Regiment of Infantry 160 acres being the NE quarter Section 31 of Township 53 N in range 23 W in the tract appropriated for military bounties in the territory of Missouri ..quarter section of land.

Note by HLD: There was also a John Debord Pvt in 10 US Inf in Capt Weeds Co, that had enlisted on 25 Jan 1813, and was also present on the muster rolls for 31 Jan 1814 and 30 Apr 1814. This John also had an heir named Joseph that recieved a military bounty in an adjoining county in Missouri on the same date as the above Joseph, s/o Jacob.

The census records would indicate that Jacob had two sons and two daughters. One son and 2 daughters married before 1810 and 1 son married after 1810. The Joseph Deboard b c 1788 and settled in Lawrence was probably one son; the other son may have been the Benjamin Deboard that married Polly Stitt and settled in Ashe Co NC. Or the John Debord that served in the War of 1812 may have been a brother to Joseph Deboard. 1800 Iredell Co, NC Census lists Jacob DeBoard as Jacob Debard.
