Biography

James Decker was born prior to 1775 likely in Virginia (this is based on census records and is yet to be proven).

James and his family left Virginia for Butler Co., Ohio sometime between 1812 and 1818. His youngest son, John, was supposedly born in Virginia in November, 1812. His oldest known daughter, Elizabeth, married in Butler Co., Ohio in December 1818.

By the time of the 1820 census, James can be located in Milford Twnp., Butler County, Ohio:

1 m 0-10 John Elliott Decker (b bet 1810-1820)
1 m 10-15 Robert Addison Decker (b bet 1805-1810)
1 m 16-18 James Decker Jr (b bet 1802-1804)
3 m 16-25 Isaac Decker, Solomon Decker, and James Decker (b bet 1795-1802)
1 m 45+ James Decker (b bef 1775)
1 f 0-10 Delina Decker (b bet 1810-1820)
1 f 45+ Mrs Decker (b. bef 1775)[1]

James died during the summer of 1826 in Butler Co., Ohio - this is based on the timing of writing his last will and testament and when it was probated.

Theories That Need More Proof

  • James was born in Virginia prior to 1776.
  • James and his family appear in the 1810 Virginia census in Rockbridge Co., Virginia.
If you look at Virginia in 1810, there is a James Decker in Shenandoah but only 4 in the household. Seems too small to be James' family.
Then there is a James "Docker" or "Dicker" in Rockbridge County with 10 in the household -- this is a total leap but just thinking.....
4 m 0-10 James, Robert, Solomon, another son or is Isaac in here
1 m 16-25 Is Isaac perhaps here or extended family or servant/apprentice
1 m 26-44 James Decker
1 f 0-10 another daughter, extended family, or servant/apprentice
1 f 10-15 Elizabeth perhaps here
1 f 16-25 Elizabeth perhaps here, another daughter, or extended family, servant/apprentice
1 f 26-44 Mrs Decker[2]
  • If the family in the 1820 Rockbridge Co., Virginia census is James' family, were there more children? Was Elizabeth actually the oldest child?
  • Was James's wife Hanna Gladden?
There is a marriage record for a James Decker and Hanna Gladden in Rockbridge Co., Virginia in September 1789. If this is James, perhaps Elizabeth was not the oldest. Who were the other possible children? Did they marry and stay in Virginia? Hanna is a name that is used again in later generations.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
