Biography

Note: In 1860 there was a man named Hiram Decker, age 20, a Sawyer born in PA, living in Carbondale, PA, with Elizabeth Decker, age 14, also born in PA, and no one else. ^[1]

In 1870, Hiram Decker, age 30, house carpenter born in PA, and his wife, Freelove, age 24, born in NY, with two daughters, Luella (8) and Ida M (5), both also born in NY, were living in Sanford, Broome County, New York. Sanford is about 45 miles north of Carbondale, and 83 miles south of Canastota, where Hiram is said to have lived at the time of his mother's death in 1900.

Hiram was counted on the U.S Veteran's Census in 1890, serving in Company B 136th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry from Aug 1862 to 1864. Disability incurred: "Back hurt"

In 1892, the family was counted on the census in Lenox, Madison, New York, Hiram was 51, a car inspector (RR), Freelove was 46, Allen Decker, 19, Gertrude Decker, 15, Edith Decker, 12, Hiram Decker, Jr., 6.

Hiram Decker lived in Canastota, Madison County, New York, at the time of his mother's death in 1900. Canastota is about 135 miles north of Carbondale.

Hiram's family was found in Lenox, Madison County, New York, when the census was taken in June of 1900. He was a 58 years old and a Railroad Car Inspector. His birth on the census was given as Dec 1844 and he reported being married to Freelove for 32 years and having six children, all still living at the time. Freelove (born July 1845 in NY) was 44. Myrtle Decker (age 17, born Oct 1882 in NY) and Hiram Decker, Jr. (age 12, born Aug 1887 in NY) were the only two children in the home.
