"Caught 95 Pounds of German Carp. Erie Engineer John R. Decker, of High Street, was fishing in the Delaware river in the rear of his home last night and he caught nine monster German carp, whose aggregate weight was 95 pounds. The largest one weighed 19 pounds." - Port Jervis Tri-States Union, June 7, 1900.

"Fire at Tri-States. Residence of John R. Decker partially destroyed. Flames Fanned by the High Winds. Building caught fire, it is thought, from a defective chimney - Most of the furniture gotten out of the building and saved. From Wednesday's Daily Union. Shortly after two o'clock this afternoon an alarm of fire was sounded for the sixth district. A second alarm soon followed. All the companies were soon on the ground except No. 5. The fire was in the house of Engineer, John R. Decker on High Street, near Brierly's hot house nurseries. A few moments before 2 o'clock Miss Clara Brierly saw the brands falling, and going to the door discovered that the roof of Mr. Decker's house was in flames. She immediately gave the alarm. While her father sent in the alarm for the fire department, Miss Brierly hurried to the burning house and alarmed the inmates. Only Mr. Decker and his step-daughter, Miss Ethel Eagar, were in the house. They made a hasty exit, and the young lady was overcome by the excitement after getting to the house of a neighbor. Neighbors at once began removing the furniture, but of course could do nothing to stay the flames, which the high winds were fast fanning into fury. Hose Co. No. 6 was soon at the scene of the fire. shortly after came Nos. 2 and 4, and they united in joining hose, and also got a stream on the fire. The work of the companies very effective, for the flames were soon under control but not until the upper part of the building was burned. At 3 o'clock the fire was out. The building was practically ruined by fire and water. Most of the furniture was carried out and saved, though in a damaged condition. All that remained inside was ruined. The fire seemed to have caught from the chimney. Burned building was insured. The residents of Erie Engineer John R. Decker, on High Street, which was partially destroyed by fire, Wednesday afternoon, is owned by Dr. W. L. Duddeback, and is insured for $700 in the Aachen & Munnich Insurance Company through the agency of Eckle & Schweiker. The furniture, owned by Mr. Decker is insured for $800 in the St. Paul Insurance Company, through the agency of Henry H. Farnum, Jr." - Tri-States Union, Thurs., Mar. 20, 1902
