Stella was born about 1893. She is the daughter of Moses Decorah and Kate Standing Woman. Her date of birth varies from one census to the next, ranging from 1890 to 1899.

Name

Her Hocąk name is given as MaJayHaWinKah, which may be transliterated as Mąjexawiga, Mąjexewiga, Mąjehawiga, Mąjehewiga, and which can be translated in many different ways.

In almost all censuses her name is given as "Stella", but in the obituary of Mary Greendeer Owen, she is mentioned under the name "Estella", which shows that Stella went by this name as well.
