Gustave Dee has German Roots.

Gustave William Dee was born on 27 Mar 1852 as German Gustav Wilhelm in Hammer-Langestück, Kreis Soldin, Provinz Brandenburg, Preußen (Prussia, Germany) nowadays Poland.

His siblings were:

  1. August Karl Gustave Dee (1840 - 1921)
  2. Wilhelmina (Dee) Worm (1845 - 1929)
  3. Christian Theodore Dee (1849 - 1933)
  4. Julianna (Dee) Kuehn (1856 - 1939)
  5. Karl Friedrich Hermann Dee (1858 - 1937)

He emigrated with his brother Charles in 1877 from Hamburg, Germany to USA. After arriving on board the ship "Herder" in New York on 25 Apr 1877, they came to Iowa.[1]

Occupation was farmer and he lived in Lansing, Iowa.

He married Augusta Louisa Feuerhelm (1851-1929) on August 12, 1879 in Lansing, Allamakee County, Iowa, with whom she patiently endured the hard ships of pioneer life on a farm in French Creek township.

This union was blessed with five children, one of whom, Herbert, at the age of four years, preceded his parents in 1891 to the Great Beyond.

Their children were:

  1. Ida Emma Elizabeth (Dee) Werth (1880 - 1972)
  2. Edward Gustave Dee (1882 - 1957)
  3. Evelyn E (Dee) Wendel (1884 - 1974)
  4. Herbert C. Dee (1887 - 1891)
  5. Malinda L. (Dee) Cooper (1893 - ~1986).

In 1910 they moved to Lansing and residing near the Park were privileged to enjoy the evening of their environment.

In 1937 he came to Dubuque to live with his daughter, Mrs. Wallace D. Cooper, 1335 Glen Oak Street. He had been taken to that city to be cared for by his daughter, but finally had to be taken to hospital, where death finally took place.

Gustave passed away on Saturday morning 19 Feb 1938 at Finley hospital in Dubuque County, Iowa, USA, where he had been a patient for some months, following a long period of illness.[2]

His survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Herman (Ida) Werth (1880-1972) of LeMars, Iowa, Mrs. A. T. (Evelyn) Wendel of Church, Iowa, and Mrs. W.D. (Malinda) Cooper of Dubuque; one son, Edward Gustave Dee (1882-1957) of Lansing, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. August Kuehn (1856-1939) of Waukon, Iowa eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife, Augusta Louisa Feuerhelm, whom he married in 1879 preceded him in death on June 8, 1929. A son, Herbert C. Dee (1887-1891), also preceded him in death.

Mr. Dee was an member of the German Presbyterian church in Lansing, and the new pastor, Rev. Henry Marks, officiated at his funeral Monday afternoon, The remains being brought here Monday morning by auto hearse. Owing to needing more room than the church afforded, services were held in Calvary Evangelical church across the street, with the pastor there, Rev. Geo. Cramer assisting. Musical numbers during the service were furnished by Misses Ada Bauman, Elsie Moellermann and George Aschom, with Mrs. Edna Aschom as accompanist.

Casket bearers were Cletus Edward Dee (1911-1992) and Delbert George Dee (1917-1980), grandsons, and Clarence Leroy Feuerhelm (1890-1970) and Ben Feuerhelm, Leonard Dee and Otto Wurm, nephews; and interment was made beside his wife in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mr. Dee was an honest, upright Christian man in every sense of the word-- an industrious, sturdy pioneer whose thrift and good management of his farm gave him a competence for his later years in life. But few of his type of men remain, and his passing causes sorrow, not only to children and relatives, but to a host of old time friends, who admired him for his outstanding traits of sincerity, honesty and rugged individualism

Gustave Dee's Rites Monday

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. from Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Waukon for Gustave Dee, 93. The Rev. D. D. Kauffman officiated at the services and burial was in Oakland cemetery. Hjalmer Olson, Reuben Grotegut, Edwin Johnson, Mulroy McDermott, Elmer Fogt and Lawrence Ricker were pallbearers.

Mr. Dee died Friday, Dec. 8 in Waukon Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was a patient for three days. He was born Jan. 5, 1874 in Germany and came to the United States when he was 12 years old. His parents were August and Ernestine (Born) Dee. He lived in Makee township and in 1926 moved to Waukon.

He was educated in the local schools and Oct. 16, 1902 married Louise Wurtzel in Waukon. He was a farmer until his retirement.

Survivors are his wife, a son William of Waukon and a daughter Mrs. Roy (Hazel) Kuntz of ElMonte, Calif. A sister Mrs. Ida Nagel of Waukon, 13 Grandchildren, 22 great great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by a son Elmer, brothers Bert and Ernest and a sister Augusta.

Mr. Dee was a member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Waukon. Martin Brothers was in charge of arrangements.
