Biography

Erastus C. Deen was born in Indiana in 1868, the son of Charles G. and Mary N. Deen. In 1880, Erastus was 12, and lived with his family in Colfax, Clinton, Indiana. The household included Charles G. Deen, 34, a carpenter, who had been unemployed for three months that Census year. He was born in Indiana, his father was born in Massachusetts, and his mother was born in England; Charles’ wife, Mary N., 34, born in Indiana, whose parents were born in New York; and their five children, all born in Indiana: William H., 14;, Erastus C., 12; daughter Deda C., 9; Orris E., 4; and Melvin P., 2. The three older children were in school. [1]

Erastus married Vietta B. Brown on 21 May 1894 in North Judson, Starke, Indiana. Erastus was 26, a locomotive fireman, living in Chicago, Illinois. He was born in Cass County, Indiana. Vietta was 19, the daughter of John and Matilda (Lain) Brown. She was born in Bartholomew County, Indiana. This was the first marriage for both parties. G.S. Slusser officiated. [2]

In 1910, the Deen family lived in their rented house at 5656 S. Halstead St., Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The household included Erastus C. Deen, 41, born in Indiana, a railroad switch man; his wife of 16 years, Vietta Brown, 36, b. Indiana, who had had no children; George W. Brown, 41, b. Indiana, a railroad switch man, a boarder (Matilda’s son/Vietta’s brother); James N. Deen, 39, a barber, a boarder (uncertain relation); and Matilda C. Brown, 61, a widow, who was married 43 years, and had had six children, two of whom were living. [3]

Erastus died, a widow, on 4 November 1945. He is buried next to his sister Deda in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Indiana. [4]
