Biography

Scottish flag
Joel Dees has Scottish Ancestors.

Joel was born about 1770 to Richard Dees and Milly (Alford) Dees most likely in Craven, South Carolina. [1] [2][3][4]

He lived in Chesterfield, South Carolina and was listed on the 1800 Census as Head of Household. [5] On the 1810 Census he had 3 sons and 3 daughters born between 1800-1810. [3] He was living in Edgefield County according to the 1811 South Carolina Census. [6] The 1820 Census recorded that Joel was "engaged in agriculture". [7] He still lived in Chesterfield on the 1830 Census, [8] and was still "employed in agriculture" on the 1840 Census. [9]

Marriage

Elenor Deas (abt.1777-abt.1855) about 1795 in South Carolina. She was named on the 1850 Census living with their son Newitt F Deas.

Death

It is inferred that he passed away after 1840 since that is when he was last recorded on the Census. Also, his widow was listed as living with their son in 1850.

Research Notes

There is no source to support his middle name being "Toombs", but a descendant is named Joel Toombs reportedly after his ancestor. So, it is possible but unsubstantiated. Deese-313 14:30, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

His birthplace is inferred as Craven, South Carolina based on the record that his father had two land patents for 350 Acres in Craven as of 1764. Based on the Census records Joel was probably born about 1770. Deese-313 14:30, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
