Biography

John Dehart was born in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

John was born in 1831. He passed away in 1916.[1][2]

In 1849, he married Margaret Lavinia Miller.[3] They are recorded together in the Tennessee Valley of Macon County in the 1850 Census.[4]She, unfortunately, died that year.[5]

In 1855, he married for a second time, to Mary Thomasson.[6] He and Mary are listed in DeHart's District in 1860, along with their three eldest children.[7]

Early in the Civil War, John enlisted in Company K of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry (9th State Troops) as a private.[8][9] When he left, Mary would have recently given birth to or been pregnant with their fourth child, John Allen, born in April of 1862.

After returning from the war, John next shows up in the 1870 Census, married to Samantha DeHart, with two more children added to the family.[10]

John then married Sarah Shepherd on 2 September 1899 in Swain County. The marriage was performed by a Baptist Minister.[11]

John is buried in Maple Springs Cemetery, Swain County.[12]
