Biography

James DELANCEY.[1]

James Delancey, on the 19th of August 1771 married Margaret, daughter of Chief Justice Allen of Pennsylvania. Five children of this marriage survived him: Charles Stephen, who served in the Royal Navy; Margaret, who wed Sir Jukes Granville Clifton, Bart.; Ann and Susan, who never married, and James, Lieutenant-Colonel in the First Dragoon Guard. None of the five had children.

There are speculations with supporting evidence of tombstone inscriptions that De Lancey had a previous union with a connection of the Livingston family. Only her Christian name, Mary, is known. She died in 1770 leaving three children John, James, and Mary. Through funds; believed to have been indirectly provided by the latter from his London exile, these children were reared and educated.

James the son of James the Lt Gov of the Colony of NY the son of Etienne was married twice. Historians do not believe the first marriage was legal since they cannot find any records -- but -- during the American Revolution Trinity Church burned to the ground destroying everything inside. The DeLancey burial vault is under Trinity Church so if they were married there all evidence is gone. James and his first wife had 2 sons and a daughter (James Harris is from that line). The 2nd wife -- Margaret Allen -- refused to allow these 3 children to live in their father's house and there is a letter in the Museum of NYC that describes how they were thrown out onto the street and their Uncle Peter (the son of Etienne) gathered them up and took them to his estate in the Bronx -- where his wife raised them with the financial help of their father's brother, John Peter. In 1783, they were evacuated from NYC and went to Nova Scotia.

Loyalist properties sold - multiple listings of his real estate holdings within NY City, to whom each was sold and for what value. [2]
