Catherine Delaney was born in Kings County, Ireland in 1822' ( Note Kings County reverted back to County Offaly in1922), She emigrated to Port Phillip, Victoria, Australiain about 1841/2 - where she met and married John Henry Tanner on 2 Oct 1842, at St Francis Church, Melbourne. Catherines brother, Daniel Delaney (1818 - 1852) and his wife Anne, sailed from Plymouth in the "Middlesex" and arrived on the 30th September 1841 , she did not accompany him. They were living in the Geelon / Barabool area.
Their children were, John Henry, Daniel Michael, James, Martha, William, Frederick (my great grandfather), Catherine, an unnamed child and Ellen.
The family lived in Geelong's Barrabool Hills , before moving to the the Bendigo goldfields in1852. From there they moved to Upper Plenty gold fields, and finally to Greta in North East Victoria, where new land was being allotted for farming in the 1860's.
As well as raising her own 6 surviving children and helping husband Jack on the farm, Catherine was midwife to at least 25 births in the Catholic community around Greta.
She died on 1 Jan 1898. Her obituary stated, "One of the largest funerals followed the remains to the Greta Cemetery the following Monday, testifying to the respect in which Mrs TANNER was held."
