William H. Delano was the son of Rufus Delano and Elizabeth F. (Childs) Delano, with whom he was living at Hartford, Maine, in 1850, at the age of 5.[1] In 1860, he was living at the age of 16 as a farm laborer at Turner, Maine, in the household of Sanford Fish.[2] Both of those censuses say he was born in Maine, but his brother George, born in 1844, and his sister Vilroy, born in 1847, were both born in Massachusetts,[3] so William's birthplace is uncertain.
