Biography

Capt. Paul Delano, died Talcahuano Chile, S.A. Feb. 4 1812 married Fairhaven Mass., Apr 13-1800 to Ann Ferguson, born Nov 5-1774, died Concepcion Chile Aug 24-1847.

Children:

  1. Mary Ann, born Jan 14-1801.
  2. Eliza, born June 2-1802, died Dec. 1803
  3. Paul Hinckley born New York Apr 2-1806.
  4. Robert Ferguson, born Jan 26-1808, unmarried, died Valparaiso, Chile Jan 1827.
  5. William Gibson, born Aug 3-1810, unmarried, died Concepcion Apr 10-1877.

Paul Delano to Chile 1818 in command of Chilean warship 'Independencia' and remained in service until death."[1]

He moved to Chile as Captain of the Curiacio where he arrived on June 22, 1819 and became an important part of that country's First Chilean Navy Squadron. He came with his two sons, Paul H., and William.
Delano was commissioned as a captain and commanded sixteen troop means of transport of the Freedom Expedition of Perú and later he commanded the Lautaro.
In 1822, he became Captain of the port of Valparaíso where he directed the building of the first wharf and the first lighthouse of the port in 1837.[2]

In letter to nephew Nathaniel of Fairhaven (Massachusetts): "Our daughter Mary Ann has been a long time unwell, since Anna Maria (Liljevalch) was born has had none since, and Anna Maria is to be married on the 21 of Dec if she lives which will be her birthday. She is a fine girl, she is to be married to an American Doctor (Thomas Stokes Page) established in Valparaiso and is thought a great deal of in his profession. Paul, owns a flour mill, three run of burrs, and a beautiful mill she is, cast iron from American, and William is in company with Mr Liliwalch Mary Ann's husband (Olof Liljevalch, Anna Maria's father) in the old establishment at Tomi and doing well."[3]
