Biography

Francis Delaval was the eldest known illegitimate child of Sir Francis Blake Delaval and his mistress Elizabeth (Betty) Roach (also referred to as Madame La Roche). Sir Francis Blake Delaval was married to Isabella Powlett née Tufton. Francis Delaval had a sister by the same parents, Frances (born in 1755).

Career

Young Francis (Frank) was bought a commission in the Army by his uncle Sir John Delaval of Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire. He joined General Howe in New York and fought at Brandywine and Germantown. Upon his return he was promoted and sent to Ireland.

He had a full military career reaching the rank of Major General in June 1811. Following the end of the Napoleonic war in 1815 he was Governor of the British Colony of St Lucia from 10 May 1814 - September 1815. Between September 1815 and 1816 he was military commander of Martinique. In July 1821 he was promoted Lieutenant General.

Marriage and family

His marriage was arranged by his uncle John to wealthy widow Mary Elizabeth Carpenter née Walsh.

Death and burial

He died 12 July 1826 in Martinique, where he was buried.
