Historically, there are great-great-grandfathers and more that show the last name as De Les Dernier within their European heritage, which translates as "of the last", and supposedly means the last to leave the Palatinate region of Germany during the seventeenth-century religious persecution there (see morehere). This family seems to have capitalized the second "d" without a gap. The name is often shortened to Dernier in New Brunswick.
