Francesco was the son of Leonardo della Rovere and Luchina Monleoni.
He entered the Franciscan Order when a young man and after studying philosophy and theology at the University of Pavia went on the lecture there and at other Italian universities.
He was responsible for commissioning the building of the Sistine Chapel and creating the Vatican Archives.
