Biography

Flag of Virginia
Native Virginian

Elizabeth Ann Delong was born between 1833-1835 in Floyd County, Virginia to Ormond Delong (1785–about 1840) and Sarah Reed (about 1790–1869). She was first married to Emory Altizer on October 4, 1855 in Montogomery County, Virginia. She is listed with her husband with three (Jeptha, Delilah, and Aaron) of their known four children on the 1860 Census[1] in Floyd County. Their daughter; Margaret Ann Elizabeth was born in January of 1862[2] and her husband passed away in July of 1863.

Elizabeth was remarried on January 16, 1866 to William Turner (the son of Wilson and Sarah Turner) in Floyd County, Virginia.[3] It should be noted that on this marriage record her father is listed as Osmund rather than Ormond. Elizabeth is listed with William with all four of her children from her first marriage and two children from her marriage to William on the 1870 Census[4] in Floyd County. By 1880 William and Elizabeth had two more children (for a total of four known children) and are listed in Pulaski County, Virginia.[5] Elizabeth passed away on January 28, 1917 in Floyd County, Virginia.[6]

Research Notes: Parents

On the marriage record for her parents her father is listed as Ormand D. Long rather than Ormand Delong:

  • Ormond D Long: Marriage • Virginia, County Marriage Records, 1771-1989
  • Name: Ormond D Long
  • Sex: Male
  • Spouse's Name: Sarah Reed or Reece
  • Spouse's Sex: Female
  • Event Type: Marriage
  • Event Date: 8 Nov 1809
  • Event Place: Virginia, United States
  • Event Place (Original): Virginia

It is believed that her father's full name is William Ormond Delong but the only record that lists William is Elizabeth's death certificate while all others (her marriage records and those of her siblings) list him as Ormond. On the 1810 Census,[16] the 1820 Census,[17] and the 1830 Census;[18] the family is listed in Montgomery County, Virginia. It is believed that in about 1831 they relocated to Floyd County where they are listed in 1840.[19] A record of death has not yet been found for Ormond; some family trees list that he passed away in 1840 while others list 1847 in Floyd County but a record of death is needed for confirmation.

Sarah Reed Delong should be listed on an 1850 Census Record or an 1860 Census Record if she passed away in 1869 but at this time I have been unable to locate her. I had originally linked a Sarah Reed here as the mother of Elizabeth but I removed her after realizing that there is more than one born in the same timeframe and more research is needed to determine which Sarah Reed was her mother.
