Biography

Black Sea Germans
Christian Delzer was a Black Sea German.

Birth

Christian was born on May 20, 1870 in the village of Johannestal in the Beresan district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Andreas Delzer Sr. and Katharina (Nuss) Delzer. He was the second of their 8 children. Christian was baptized in the Lutheran church in Johannestal on May 31, 1870.[1]


Family

On February 18, 1898, at the age of 27, Christian married Sophia Bitterman (1873-1952) in South Russia.

Immigration

On October 24, 1900, at the age of 30, Christian arrived in New York, traveling from Bremen, Germany aboard the S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse. He was traveling with his wife Sophia.[2]


Death

On January 18, 1952, at the age of 81, Christian passed away in Aberdeen, SD. He is buried in Ellendale City Cemetery in Ellendale, ND.[3][4]

Christian Delzer, 81, of Napoleon, N. D., father of Edwin Delzer and Mrs. Delbert Smith who reside near Ellendale, died Friday at Aberdeen. A retired farmer, he had lived in the Napoleon vicinity since 1900.

Funeral services planned for Tuesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran church here were postponed because of the storm, and were rescheduled for yesterday afternoon.

Rev. C. H. Mehl was officiant and interment was made in the Ellendale cemetery. The Holte funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Born May 20, 1870 in South Russia, Mr. Delzer married Sophia Bitterman there Feb. 18. 1898.

Besides his son and daughter residing in Dickey county, Mr. Delzer leaves his widow, a son Peter of Napoleon, three other daughters, Mrs. J. J. Martell, Minneapolis, Mrs. Allen Edwards, McKenzie, N. D., and Mrs. Clarence Schuchard, Billings, Mont., a sister, Mrs. Eva Bohler, Minneapolis, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
