Rachel (Demarest) Van Cleave was part of the Low Dutch Settlements in Kentucky, 1780-1810
Biography
Rachel Demarest Ryker married John VanCleave as her 2d husband in 1783; after her first husband, Gerardus Ryker,[1][2] was killed at the ‘Long Run Massacre’ on 15 Sep 1781, at Bullskin Run [3] (near today’s Eastwood, Shelby County, Kentucky).
Research Notes
Rachel's parents are Samuel De Maree and Lea Demarest (cousins) according to the New Jersey Births and Christenings Index which reads:
Name: Rachel Demarest
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 09 Jan 1743
Christening Place: Dutch Reformed Church, Schraalenburg, Bergen County, New Jersey
The 1938 book “The Demarest Family” [4] lists two Rachel cousins, both born about same time, but their information is switched. This Rachel is the daughter of Samuel Demaree and his cousin Lea Demarest (see the 1964 book “The Demarest Family” [5] unavailable online). Samuel altered the spelling of his surname from Demarest to conform to the French sounding, Demaree. He migrated with his family to Pennsylvania, where Rachel was baptized, and then on to Kentucky. Land litigation documents filed after his death list Rachel and her husband, John Van Cleave (source). Their two sons, Peter and David, are named for Rachel's grandfathers, the fathers of Samuel and his wife Leah. Find-a-Grave contributor Nate Bramlett [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rachel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rachel:
The birth record cited in the biography--"baptized 9 Jan 1743" does not show Samuel Demarest and Leah as parents.

Rachel Du Marce baptism on 1 Apr 1744, daughter of Samuel Du Marce & Lea, in Southampton, Bucks, Pennsylvania, United States.
Cannot picture how Gerardus Rycken marries Rachel Demarest in 1762; then Gerardus and his first wife, Mary Shepherd, are both killed in the 1781 Long Run Massacre; whereupon Gerardus’ widow, Rachel Demarest, marries John Van Cleave in 1783. Something is amiss. Was it Rachel at the massacre, and there never was a Mary Shepherd married to Gerardus Rycken?
This kind of confusion arises sometimes =- for example, when bits and pieces from different people's family trees get combined. Do you know of (or can you find) primary records or other reliable sources that would help sort this out?
DeMarest-5 and Demarest-362 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. Thanks!
