On 6 July 1848, Giuseppa Battaglia in Demma, age 60 (b. 1788), reports the birth of a boy to Rosalia Bova, age 36 (b. 1812), and Filippo Demma, age 36 (b. 1812), bottegaio (merchant), in their home that day in Termini Imerese. The baby is named Luigi Demma.[1]
On 22 January 1877, Luigi Demma, celibe (bachelor), age 28 (b. 1848), merchant, native resident of Termini, son of Filippo Demma and Rosalia Bova; and Giuseppa Balsamo, age 22 (b. 1854), cucitrice (seamstress), native resident of Termini, daughter of Giuseppe Balsamo and Domenica Todaro; announce their marriage in the civil record of Termini Imerese, where all are resident. Witnesses are Vincenzo Torricello, age 56 (b. 1820), galeltiere?, and Agostino Giuffre’, age 34 (b. 1842), civile.[2]
Luigi and Giuseppa have at least three children: Filippo (c. 1880), Giuseppe/Joseph (1884), and Agostino (c. 1887).
Filippo's birth record has not been found. He names his father in emigration records, and gives his date of birth as 12 or 14 March, in 1880 or 1881 in Termini Imerese.
On 11 May 1884, Antonina Cira’, age 46 (b. 1838), contadina, reports the birth on 9 May of a child to Giuseppa Balsamo, age 26 (b. 1858), wife of Luigi Demma, age 32 (b. 1852), in their home in the piazza San Carlo, #32, in Termini Imerese. The baby is a boy and is named Giuseppe.[3]
Agostino is known from the record of his emigration in 1912.
In 1912, Filippo, Giuseppe, Agostino, and their wives Rosa lo Bello, Elvira Minardo, and Saveria (surname not yet known) travel together to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Agostino has lived since 1901, Giuseppe has lived since 1904, and Filippo has lived since 1908.
Filippo dies on 22 October 1963 in Lincoln, Nebraska.[4] His obituary names a surviving brother, Joseph, living in Italy.[5]
Joseph dies in September 1967. His obituary says that he and his wife retired to Italy in 1960.[6] Both brothers ran produce businesses in Lincoln.
