James Dempsey was born in Scotland.

James was born March 1901, Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland. Parents being Alexander Dempsey, occupation Boiler Fireman and Rose Tonner McAuley . ^[1]

1901 Residence 64 Main Street, Shettleston, County, Lanarkshire, James Dempsey age just under 1 month, his father Alexander Dempsey age 33 years, occupation Iron Work Labourer , mother Rose Dempsey age recorded as 43 years. Siblings in the household, Agnes Dempsey age 73 ? (13) , recorded as attending School (Scholar), Martha Dempsey age 11 years ( Scholar), Alexander Dempsey 9, (Scholar) Elizabeth Dempsey 7, (Scholar), John Dempsey age 5, Rose Dempsey age 2 years . All the children in the household were born in Bellshill except for James he was born in Shettleston and Agnes who was born Ireland. Also in the household is William Mckeen Age 31 a boarder. ^[2]

Note: The 1901 Census above has Agnes Dempsey Age 73 years. I think this is a miss transcription of age she would be 13 ....

1901 Sister, Sarah Dempsey missing on this Census night, it is known that Sarah Dempsey had worked away from home at Muthil. I wonder if this is the period she did this....

1911 James Dempsey would have been about 10 years old when his sister Elizabeth Dempsey died, she was 17. Residence was 118 Clydesdale Buildings.

1914 James Dempsey's 2 older brothers enlist to go to WWI , Alexander Dempsey enlisted with The Royal Scots, and John Dempsey with the 10th Highland Light Infantry.

1915 James Dempsey's brother John Dempsey was KIA, at the Battle of Loos.

1917 His other brother, Alexander Dempsey jnr. returned and was put on Class W Reserve List to go back into the Iron Foundries.

1939 His mother Rose, suffered with acute Bronchitis for 8 days and died, age 82 years, usual residence 8 Clydesdale, Mossend, Bellshill. James Dempsey was recorded as the informant of death.

1949 His father Alexander Dempsey , age 83 years died, due to Carcinoma of the Plylorus. Usual address 8 Clydesdale, Mossend, Bellshill. James Dempsey was the recorded informant.

• James Dempsey of Clydesdale buildings. was found lying in his small kitchen beside his gas oven with the gas on but it was not lighted no one knew if it was intentional or not as he was drinking heavily at the time.

He had been sober for a good while and had been attending gospel meetings then gone back to the drink.

It was sad as he was good to me and my sisters when he was sober but he always went back to drink.

So there you are another family skeleton out of the cupboard.

1953 James Dempsey, age 52 years, a single man, occupation Bricklayers labourer, usual residence 8 Clydesdale Buildings, Mossend, died due to Coal Gas Poisoning, his death was recorded as suicide. His brother Alexander Dempsey was recorded as informant of death. ^[3]
