William Anderson Dempsey was born about 1827 in Black Bottom, Logan, Commonwealth of Virginia, son of Joseph Dempsey (~1797–~1880) and Jane Alena Vance (1791–1865).

William married Mahulda J. Blair (born about 1827 in Greenbrier County, Virginia, United States; daughter of John Smith Blair and Pollianna (Baisden) Blair). Their children were:

• Estelle Dempsey (~1853– )
• Hyrum Dempsey (1856–1948)
• John Dempsey (~1859– )
• Joseph Harrison Dempsey (1862–1943)
• James A. Dempsey (1866–~1920)

William died on June 29, 1875 in Black Bottom, West Virginia, United States, aged about 47.^[1]
