Michael Gene Dempsey, 55, of Peoria, formerly of Quincy and Havana, died at 5:20 a.m. Saturday (April 12, 2008) in the OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born July 30, 1952, in Quincy, the son of Edward J. and Alice R. Winking Dempsey.
He married Jacquelyn S. McCormick on March 16, 1974, in Macomb. She survives. Mike earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Illinois University in Macomb and taught agriculture at Unity High School in Mendon and at Palmyra, Mo., then he served as principal of St. Mary's Grade School in Quincy, and Havana's grade school. Following this he was principal at Versailles and St. David (Ill.), during which time he interned and earned his specialist degree in education administration from Western Illinois University. He then became superintendent at Bradford and later at Pleasant Hill, where he eventually retired due to ill health.
Mike was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Peoria and the Illinois Association of School Administrators.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; one son, Brent Alan Dempsey of Peoria; his parents, Ed and Alice Dempsey of Quincy; two sisters, Joan (Craig) Kroeter of Quincy and Sharon (Al) Mast of Springfield; and a brother, Mark (Milicent) Dempsey of Fowler. Included in his family are 16 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winking and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dempsey.
