Stephen's birth is recorded in the register of Horsham General Baptist Chapel as "Stephen Dendy son of Jo. and Sarah Dendy (late of Griggs in the parish of Horsham) but now of Ifield Court in the parish of Ifield was born May 8 1800'. Stephen married Elizabeth Sanders on 17 September 1734 at St Mary Reigate, Stephen was 'of Leigh' and Elizabeth was 'of Reigate'. In 1841 Stephen is living at Leigh Place with his wife Elizabeth and their children John (6), Jane (4), Ellen (2) and Stephen (1). In 1851 Stephen is living in Reigate with his wife Elizabeth and their children Jane (14), Ellen (12) and Elizabeth (9), also in the household is spinster Eleanor Saunders (probably the sister of Elizabeth Dendy nee Sanders). On 29 December 1856 Stephen was granted Administration of the estate of his son John Caffyn Dendy who had died that month at Leigh Place. When the 1861 census is taken on 7 April Stephen is living in Reigate with wife Elizabeth and unmarried daughters Jane and Elizabeth but just over 2 weeks later on 24 April 1861 he dies. Stephen's Will, with two codicils, was proved on 22 June 1861by Elizabeth Dendy of Sandfels Reigate widow the relict John Sanders of Bansted in Surrey yeoman and John Wood of Bansted timber merchant who were the Executors, the effects were under £25,000. Stephen was buried at St Bartholomew Leigh on 2 May 1861 'of Sandfels, age 60'.
