During the War of 1812, Charles served as a private and ensign in the 3rd York Militia.
Charles, like his oldest brother George, served with a "flank company" enlisted by Major-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock at the start of the War of 1812. (These were militia units whose recruits were thought to be more loyal to the British Crown than those dominated by recent American immigrants.) [1]
As a private in Captain Cameron's Company of the 3rd Regiment of York Militia,[2] he fought at the Battle of Queenston Heights.
On Dec. 25, 1812, Charles Denison was commissioned as an ensign. [3]
During the defence of York on April 27, 1813, he and George (now ensigns) were both taken prisoner by the Americans. [4][5]
From Sept. 25 to Oct. 3, 1813, he served in Capt. John Denison’s Co. at York. [6]
On June 14, 1814, he reported that ten privates in Capt. Denison’s Company had surrendered to the Americans on Apr. 27, 1813 in order to receive plunder. [7]
From July 7 to 24, 1814, he served at York. [8]
On June 5, 1815, he was recorded as an ensign. [9]
After his father's death in 1824, Charles and his brother Thomas were dismayed to find that the bulk of John Denison's large estate had been left to George. Even the titles to their own farmland had not been left to them. [10]
Charles died in 1828 and is buried in the Denison family cemetery, St. John's Cemetery on the Humber, in Weston, Ontario.[11]
At his death, Charles held the rank of captain.
On Feb. 16, 1836, his heirs were registered to receive a militia land grant of 100 acres, as Charles had been a former resident of York Twp. and a former private in a flank company. [12]
