John, christened November 27, 1755, in Hedon, Yorkshire, was the son of George Denison (Dennison) [1] and Mary Parkinson. [2]
On May 26, 1792, a notice appeared in the Ispswich Journal that John Denison of Alton Hall Mill, Suffolk, would be "leaving this country" and holding an auction of "household furniture, china, brewing and dairy utensils" on June 7. [3]
After emigrating to Upper Canada later that year with his wife and three sons, John settled in York County. A large land grant and later purchases of farm land enabled him to become a gentleman farmer and member of the colonial aristocracy. He was a member of the York militia as well as [4] a member of the first congregation of the Cathedral Church of Saint James.
During the War of 1812, John served as captain in the 3rd Regiment of York Militia. [5]
He commanded the Whitby Township Company. [6]
On Sept. 5, 1812, his company was ordered to Fort George. [7]
From Sept. 8 to 15, 1812, he commanded his company. [8]
From Sept. 25 to Oct. 3, 1813, he was serving at York. [9]
After April 27, 1814, he surrendered to the Americans at York. [10]
Sometime after April 28, 1814, ten of his privates surrendered to the Americans at York in order to gain plunder. [11]
On June 5, 1815, he was recorded as a captain. [12]
On July 11, 1816, John retired from his commission. [13]
After the war, he made a claim for losses to the Americans and British. The claims were rejected because he did not present proof of the losses. [14]
He died in 1824 and is buried in St. John's Cemetery on the Humber, the family cemetery he founded in Weston, now a part of Toronto, Ontario. [15]
