Biography

Geneva DENNING was born 11 Jun 1920 in Wayne, North Carolina, United States. She was the daughter of Martin Denning and Minnie Keene.

She passed away 20 Sep 2012 in Savannah, Chatham, Georgia, United States.

Mrs. Geneva Denning Strickland, 92, died Thursday at Hospice House in Savannah, GA.

Mrs. Strickland, born in Wayne County, was the daughter of the late Martin and Minnie Keen Denning and the widow of Lumis Wright Strickland, they were married December 21, 1941 and they made their home on the Strcikland Family Farm in Sampson County. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Denning Warren and Leola Denning Johnson and three brother, Thurman, George and Martin Denning. Mrs. Strickland graduated from East Carolina Teacher's College with a teaching certificate and received her Bachelor of Science in Education with honors from Atlantic Christian College. She retired from teaching elementary school in Sampson County School District after 45 years of service. She was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. She taught the Adult Men's Sunday School class for 59 years, served as Principle of Vacation Bible School, sang in the Adult Choir, and was in the Women's Missionary Union. She also participated in the Herring Commuinity Grange and Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as the Eastern Star with her sisters, Thelma and Leola.

Mrs. Strickland is survived by daughters, Betty Strickland Heard and husband Keith, of Savannah, GA; and Jenny Strickland Williamson and husband, Rev. L.E. Williamson of Laurens, SC; grandchildren, Dr. Joanna Heard Suarez and husband, Dr. Adalfo Suarez of Commerce, GA; Marsha Heard Greenebaum and husband , David of Macon, GA; and Elizabeth and Maria Williamson of Laurens, SC; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Sam Suarez and Aaron and Rebecca Greenebaum, sister-in-law, Blanche Strickland Shipp of Clinton, NC; and ten nieces and nephews. The family remembers her for her wisdom, her warmth and her biscuits.

The family received friends at 5060 Mt. Moriah Church Road, Clinton, NC. the Strickland Home Place on Friday, September 21, 2012, 6-8pm.

Funeral services were held at 2pm, Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 11341 N. US Hwy. 421 with the Rev. L.E. Williamson, III officiating assited by the Rev. W.H. Calcutt.[1]
