Biography

John Dennis was born in about 1789 and baptised on 6th April 1789 in Measham, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of John Dennis and his wife, Sarah Cooper. [1]

John Dennis married Elizabeth Pymm on 27 Mar 1815 in Tamworth. [2]

They had a daughter Harriet, born in Tamworth in 1839, who appears on the 1851 census with them. This therefore confirms that the marriage to Elizabeth Pymm/Pimm is the correct one: [3]

a son, James Dennies (b 29 Mar 1842, bap 1 Apr 1842, d 1 jan 1843) [17][18],

and a daughter, Emma Dennies b 1843 who also appears in the GRO records. [19]

In 1851, John Dennis (59, a miner) and Elizabeth (54, born in Appleby, Leicestershire) were living in Bolebridge Street, Tamworth. Their children, Richard (32, born in Smisby, Derbyshire), Sarah (14), Harriet (11), Emma (7) and Martha (3) all born in Tamworth, were living with them. [20]

In 1861, John Dennis (69, a coal miner) and Elizabeth (64) were still living in Bolebridge Street, Tamworth. Son, Richard (43, single, a coal miner), daughter, Emma (10) and one grandchild, John Dennis (4) were also in the household. [21]

Wife, Elizabeth died age 64 and her death registered in Q1 of 1861 in Tamworth. [22]

In 1871, John Dennis (79) was a widower. Son, Richard (53, a Coal Miner) and grandson, John Dennis were still living with him in Tamworth. [23]

John Dennis (90) died in 1880 in Tamworth, Staffordshire. [24]
