Mary Dennis was probably born about 1752 in the area of Holderness around Burton Pidsea, as she married and had a daughter in that village in 1774.
Mary Dennis married John Hardbattle from Lund in 1774 in the village of Burton Pidsea in south central Holderness, about 5 miles east of Preston which was itself at that time at least four miles east of Hull. [1]
John Hardbattle baptises a daughter Ann Hardbattle in Burton Pidsea. [2] The calendar had changed before this date: It was entirely accepted by 1774 that February was the second month and May the fifth month with the sole exception of the British Treasury where the year still begins about 5th April to this day (2021 UK).
John baptises a son also called John in 1777 in Humbleton Parish, only two miles to the north, where he is living in he smaller village of Danthorpe.
Hardbattle is a very rare name. At this time it was found almost entirely in the area of East Yorkshire north of Beverley : So John is a forerunner coming to Holderness and we can be reasonably sure that in the 1770s there is not yet a second such John Hardbattle in this little area.
