"On Sunday evening, November 18 [1906] she [the steamer "Dix"] left Seattle at 7:24 p.m. with 77 passengers aboard..... As the boat swung away from the dock Mate Charles Dennison relieved Captain Percy Lermond at the wheel... As the "Dix" made her turn off Alki Point light the mate, in the darkened pilot house, saw the lights of a big steamer off to starboard. There was plenty of room and he wasn't worried until suddenly the misty, night fashioned illusion of safety came into focus and was shattered by the hoarse close bellow of the big ship's ["Jeanie"] siren.... 45 people including the mate were missing when it was all over. Most of their bodies still lie in the dark cabins of the "Dix" a hundred fathoms deep off Alki Point." [Newell, Gordon R. "Ships of the Inland Sea", Binford's & Mort, Publishers, Portland, OR, 1960 pp 142-144]
