Biography

Alfred William Thomas Denney aka Denny was born in 1859 in Gravesend, Kent, England to Timothy Denny and Eliza (Stevens) Denny. His birth was registered in Gravesend in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Stevens.[1]

Alfred William Thomas Denney, son of Timothy & Eliza, was christened on 27 Feb 1859 at St George in Gravesend.[2]

In 1861 "Eldred Danaf" [Alfred Denney] (age 2) lived at 80 West Street in Gravesend with his father "Emmah" [Timothy] (26, General Dealer), mother Eliza (26, General Dealers Wife), sister Eliza (4), and brother William (1 month).[3]

In 1871 Alfred Denney (age 12) lived at 80 West Street in Gravesend St George with his father Timothy (37, Furniture Dealers Broker), mother Eliza (37), and seven siblings: Eliza (14), William (10), Walter (8), John (6), Fredrick (4), Albert (2), and Alice (1).[4]

Alfred Denney (age 21, Bachelor, Fisherman, son of Timothy Denney (deceased), Government Contractor) married Ellen Welsby (age 20, Spinster, daughter of James Welsby, Labourer) on 22 Apr 1882 at the parish church in Fleetwood, Lancashire - the witnesses were Samuel Edwards & Ann Johnson.[5] The marriage was registered in Fylde, Lancashire in the second quarter of the year.[6]

Alfred and Ellen had two daughters:

  1. Martha Ellen Denny (1883-)
  2. Isabella Best Denny (1887-)

Alfred's wife Ellen Denney passed away in 1887. Their newborn daughter Isabella was adopted by Ellen's brother-in-law John Best & sister Martha (Welsby) Best.

Alfred Denney (age 29, Bachelor [Widower], Mariner, son of Timothy Denney, Government Contractor) married Ellen Blundell (age 22, Spinster, daughter of James Blundell, Master Mariner) on 14 May 1888 at the parish church in Fleetwood - the witnesses were Peter Blundell & Mary Blundell.[7] The marriage was registered in Fylde in the second quarter of the year.[8]

Alfred and Ellen had at least seven children:

  3. Annie McLennon Denny (1892-)

In 1891 Alfred William Denny (age 31, Mariner) lived at 49 Walmsley Street in Thornton, Lancashire with his wife Ellen (23) and two daughters: Martha E (8) and Eliza (9 months), as well as boarder Annie King (28, Machinist).[9]

In 1901 Alfred Denney (age 42, General Laborer) lived at 15 Chapel Lane in Gravesend with his wife Ellen (33) and four children: Eliza (10), Annie (8), Emma (6), and Alfred (2).[10]

In 1911 Alfred Denney (age 56, Labourer General) lived at 32 Walmsley St in Fleetwood, Lancashire with his wife Ellen Denney (45), four children: Emma (17, Domestic Servant), Alfred (13, School), Fredrick (10, School), and Eliza Naylor (20), son-in-law Earnest Naylor (23, Fisherman Steam Trawling), and granddaughter Lily Naylor (1) - additional details from the census image: Alfred & Ellen had been married 23 years; ten children had been born in their marriage (5 still living and 5 who had died).[11]

Alfred W T Denny passed away in 1915, aged 56 years. His death was registered in Fylde in the second quarter of the year.[12]
