Biography

Birth 1730 & Parentage

Peter Dent, s/o Peter and Mary (Brooke) Dent, was b. 8 Aug 1730, according to the registers of both the St. John and Rock Creek Parishes. [1]

He was b. St. Johns Parish, Prince Georges Co., Maryland. [2]

Peter Dent's father, Judge Peter Dent, was b. 1693 Charles County; s/o William and Elizabeth (Fowke) Dent. He later established his seat in Prince George's County. He m. Mary Brooke, d/o Thomas and Lucy (Smith) Brooke. [1]

Inheritance from Father 1757

"By the will of his father he was devised all realty of his parents lying in Frederick County - a section of the Province where he later established his seat." [1]

Marriage 1758

William Dent m. ca 1758 Verlinder Beall, b. ca 1736, d/o Samuel Beall, Jr. and Eleanor Brooke. [3]

Land Transactions

A number of land transactions are detailed in the Charles County Gentry. Several are highlighted below to show his location.

  • Jan 24, 1749: William Dent, Gent., then a resident of Prince George's County, received from Lucy Brooke - the tract Dann, lying on Rock Creek near the land of Thomas Clealands. [1]
  • 1758: William Dent, of Frederick County, purchased from George Beckwith Resurvey on Charles' Choice, lying on Rock Creek. [1]
  • Oct 17, 1772: William Dent, of Frederick Co, conveyed to John Kennedy, of the same county, 82 acres of Resurvey on Locust Thickett. [1]

Migration to North Carolina 1772-73

William Dent is found in North Carolina in early 1773: "On Feb 2, 1773, William Dent purchased a 320 acre tract of land on Reedy Ford Creek in Orange County, North Carolina, later to become part of Guilford County. There he settled and became a leading citizen of western North Carolina." [1]

Patriotic Service 1775-76

  • 1775: William Dent was a delegate from Guilford County to the Provincial Congress of North Carolina [1]
  • 1775: Served as a member of the Committee of Safety for the district of Salisbury [1]
  • 1776: Delegate to the Provincial Congress [NC] [1]
  • 1776: On Dec. 11, he was commissioned a Captain in the Revolutionary forces and was Commissary Officer of the 9th Battalion of the North Carolina troops. [1]

Migration to Georgia 1792

He removed from North Carolina during 1792 and established his home near Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia. [1]

Hancock Co, Georgia Inferior Court Minutes (1800-1808): "12Jull800. District Five shall include the road from Obahdiah Richardson to Martin Gilberts and the following persons to work theron, viz, William Dent Jr., William Dent Sr., Risdon Moore Sr., Zachariah Middleton, Hines Holt, Bolling Hale, John and Solomon Lankston, Wyche and Tisdale Whatley, Abner Barksdale, Taylor Nelson, John Hill and Jas. Barksdale, overseer". Road ran from Powellton, Hancock Co, GA to White Plains, Greene Co, GA. This general area was part of Wilkes Co. previous to Greene Co. Creation in 1786.

Death 1805

Captain Dent died in Georgia during 1805. [1]
