Military

Records indicate from July 10 1861, Dudley was a private in the Union WV 6th Cavalary until June 12 1865 along with his brother, Marmaduke Dent. He originally mustered in at Camp Hews, near Clarksburg, Virginia.

July 25 1862, Dudley appears on Co. K 3rd Regiment Virginia Infantry muster roll, detailed as a sharpshooter. On September-October 1862's sheet, it states that he had lost his Enfield rifle and bayonet. Dudley re-signed for an additional three years of service on February 1 1864. Dudley was granted a month long furlough to go home before he resumed duty on February 25 1864. At the time he re-signed he was listed as being forty-five years old on that date. His occupation was listed as a painter.

On November 28 1864, he was captured by the Confederates at New Creek, Virginia, and taken to Staunton, before being imprisoned at Richmond, Virginia on December 7 1864. Dudley was released on February 17 1865 at Aikens Landing, Virginia. During his captivity, he listed his wife, Mary E. Dent as next to kin, and that she resided in Mannington, Marion County, WV. Dudley was also hospitalized during his imprisonment for rheumatism.

Dudley was paid $16.00 per month for active service.[2][3][4]
