Mary Louise Denton was born on August 31, 1849 in Westport, Digby, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Edward Snow Denton and Sarah Ann McDormand. She married John Oliver Welch. From 1871 to 1911, she appears in censuses as John's Baptist wife in Westport. During a border crossing in Calais, Washington, Maine in 1917, she listed her occupation as a nurse. By 1921 she was a widow in Westport, and she died on September 21, 1933 in Norfolk, Massachusetts.
