John Denton was christened on 3 Apr 1836 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire, England. He was the son of William and Sarah Denton. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Whiston.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in Hackley Moss, Eccleston. William was a journeyman mason. In addition to William and Sarah's own children, 5-year-old Mary Denton was with them on the night of the census; she was probably the daughter of William's first cousin Joseph Denton (1806-).
By March 30th 1851, they were in Acres Row, Prescot; John was an apprentice watchmaker, his father was a labourer in a stone quarry.
