"The records show that one John Depew served as the artificer in Captain Neth's Independent Company, Virginia Troops, stationed at Fort Pitt, Revolutionary war. The dates of the beginning and ending of his service are not of record; but his name first appears on a roll dated December 28, 1777, and last appears on roll dated April 5, 1778, with remark showing that he was sick in the hospital."
Service begun Dec 1778 concluded aft 05 Apr 1778 with Virginia Militia, his rank was a an Artificer, Private under Capt Hethe's Ind Co, stationed at Fort Pitt PA

Research Notes
Identity: First found in a 1939 publication as "John Depew," the writer asserts John Depew was born in LONDON c1726 to 'Gauthier' Depew, a [Protestant] Huguenot who emigrated from France to London c1690. He goes on to say John emigrated to Middlesex, New Jersey c1748. No sources are provided for this material. [12][13]
No records for father appear to exist in France or Great Britain.
BP: 'near Ludlow Castle, Shropshire, England' appears in online trees at other genealogy sites across the web, unsourced.[14]
No birth records in England (incl London, Shropshire, and surrounds).
John Depew reportedly married Catherine Shepard (unsourced).[14]

Middle initial 'W': unconfirmed. In REV War records, earliest published accounting (1939) and DAR applications, he is referred to by first and last name only.

1778(08Sep): John Depew ...Surveyor of the Road from John Howard's to the Big Lick, and that the tithables within three miles of the said road do attend the said Surveyor when reqd. to keep the same in repair as the law directs. p274
1784: Succeeded as Surveyor. p395
1789(22Aug): John Depew Sr, Obtained 370acres, Glade Creek (nr same, both sides of the Great Road).
