It is believed Walter Depew, also seen as Gauthier (Walter) Depew and Walter "Gaultier" Depew, was originally invented as part of an unverified and potentially false pedigree. Some descendants may disagree with this conclusion. If evidence showing otherwise is at hand, please add to Research Notes (incl citation links). Here is what has been learned thus far:
previously connected to Pierre Dupuy Sr b 1695, AFTER Walter's alleged birth, since removed.
Alternate death date of 01 Jul 1728 (unsourced)
Gauthier Depew, also seen as
Walter Gaultier Depew
Reportedly:
B. c1674, c1675 or c1680 or c1688 or c1703 in France.[1]; specifically Paris.[2]
D c1728 or c1758 in Shropshire, England [1]; specifically, near Ludlow Castle.[2]
Research Notes
NO records nor evidence of his existence have been located in archival databases of France, England (incl London, Shropshire, Staffordshire), Huguenots, British Historical Archives (BHO) U of London, Online Genealogy Databases (various), or US Colonial or National Archives: checking var. Depew, Depue, Depais, Depay(s), Dupay(s), Dupuy, Dupuis, Gauthier, Gaultier, etc, etc...
Identity Claims/Lore: First found as 'Walter Depew', father of John Depew who was b. 1726 "near Ludlow Castle in the north of England" in Old Family Records, v4 by Milo Custer, first publ. 1914. [3]; the book, a genealogy collection, names the provider of the family tree, but does not provide documents or sources. Later seen in Boyd's "Family History of East Tennessee" (1939) as "Gauthier Depew," the writer states Gauthier was a [Protestant] Huguenot who emigrated from France to LONDON, England c1690 and had a son, John Depew, born London c1726 who emigrated to Middlesex, New Jersey c1748.[4][5] Now seen in contemporary [digital] genealogies as "Walter 'Gaultier' Depew."[1]
'Gauthier'/'Gaultier' is a French form of Walter. It was historically found in Bretagne (Breton, Britanny) as a male surname or a leading first name for the wife or daughter of a man with the surname. French Bretons are Celtic in origin.[6]
'Depew' is an American English variant of 'Dupuy' 'Depue' etc... Numerous French spelling variants, too many to parse. The surname can be locative (e.g. Dupuy 'of Puy' or 'Depay 'of height' or 'high land').
Parents: UNKNOWN.
Widely attributed as son of one Pierre Depais of Bretagne (France) and Pierre's wife "Mrs Unknown Lefevre," gr-s of Bartholomew Depuy of Paris ~ all patently false (Pierre's fa was Jan Depais and the family has documented roots in Bretagne). [2]
Profile Corrections:
Errantly attached as son to Pierre 'Peter' Dupuy b. c1695, Germany, since detached.
Persona Notes
It is thought the original genealogy informing Custer's Old Family Records, v4 (c1914) and Boyd's later "Family History of East Tennessee"(c1939), subsequently qtd in Family records, Depew, Jones, Boyd, Vaughan, Hope, McFarland, Jack, Helm, Everhart, Belk, Tackett, (c1959), all apparently published in good faith, contain the subject of this profile (Walter) as a remnant of a fabricated pedigree originally designed to connect his alleged son, John Depue/Depew, as a gr-son of Comte Bartholomew Dupuy and Dupuy's alleged 1st wife Marie Gauthier (Gautier, Gaudier); however, while the suspect pedigree to Bartholomew Dupuy was washed from relevance, unreliable data regarding Walter/'Gauthier' was retained and inadvertently passed on as factual.
Walter "Gauthier/Gaultier" Depew , nor variant name(s), is confirmed or supported by primary source documents, other evidence, or information.

DuPuy Depew-1 and Depew-179 appear to represent the same person because: Same data. Name on only existing publication reads 'Depew' not Dupuy so merge should be toward Depew-179.
