Dr. Joseph S. Deputy, born 31 Jan 1818, was the oldest child of Joshua Deputy (1783-1870) and his second wife, Mary Woods Deputy (1788-1875), and a native of the state of Indiana.
It appears that Joseph earned his medical degree in Indiana, or perhaps further east, some time prior to 1842. His academic records have not yet been found.
In 1842, Dr. Deputy located to Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas where he established a large and lucrative medical practice. He purchased a homestead about 4 miles south of Helena close to the Mississippi River in St. Francis Township and eventually built a plantation of over 700 acres, along with almost 100 slaves by the outbreak of the US Civil War in 1861.
Joseph's sister Hetty (Deputy) Knowlton lived in Helena as well.
In 1844, Dr. Deputy married Nancy Alexander, the daughter of Lawson H & Lucy Jane 'Jane' (Alexander) Alexander. The Alexander family owned many plantations. Nancy died October 29th 1855 in Phillips County, Arkansas.
Dr. & Mrs. Deputy had three children:
Lucy Jane, wife of Pvt. John H Penney;
Mark, who went on to become a doctor like his father; and
Quintina McHaug Deputy, who became a dedicated teacher.
Civil War
During the Civil War, Arkansas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. Helena and Phillips County, Arkansas, only 20 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee, along the Mississippi River, became a focal point of the western campaigns of the war. In the Spring of 1861, the Confederate forces established artillery batteries along the Mississippi River in Phillips County to prevent the reinforcement of Federal military posts south of Helena.
In March 1862, a fire broke out in Helena, consuming several blocks of the town, including Dr. Deputy's medical offices.
In July 1862, Union forces seized Helena and established jurisdiction over Helena and the surrounding county. During that time, even though Dr. Deputy hired his own guards to protect his 700+ acres, Union soldiers freed Dr. Deputy's slaves and repeatedly ravaged Deputy's food storage, barns, crops, tools, livestock, and acres of fences to sustain the local Union establishment.
Taking ill from the loss of all his assets, Deputy fell into a sea of whiskey [1] and drank himself to death in the fall of 1862.
After Dr. Deputy's death and the conclusion of the Civil War, his children sued the United States government for all the damages and losses that were done to his property during the Civil War -- Over $58,000.

Burial
Dr. Joseph S. Deputy and his wife, Nancy, were buried in The "Old Graveyard" (aka Graveyard Hill or Reservoir Hill today), which was largely destroyed by Union forces during the Battle of Helena, 4 July 1863. After the war concluded, local residents rebuilt a new cemetery closer to the center of town (Maple Hill Cemetery) where they relocated as many bodies and headstones from the Old Graveyard as they could recover, but forced to leave an unknown number of bodies behind. As there are no Deputys currently listed as buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, it's reasonable to speculate that the bodies of Dr. Joseph S. Deputy and his wife, Nancy, were among those bodies never recovered.[6]
Census
1850 United States Census, Helena, Phillips, Arkansas[7]
As of July 1862, when Union troops came to Dr. Deputy's plantation, plundered his property and freed its slave community, Dr. Deputy was understood to have one-hundred fifty-two (152) slaves on his property. (It's not at all clear how Dr. Deputy acdquired an additional 54 slaves since the 1860 US Census.)[1], (Statement of the Case, Para. #1)
As of the 1870 Census, Lucy Deputy, who was working as a school tutor for hire, and her brother Mark, were living in a boarding hotel in downtown Helena.[11] Their sister, Tina Deputy, had relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where she was boarding and schooling at St. Mary's Female Seminary.[12]
