Michael Derreberry was born about 1779 in Burke county, North Carolina, a son of John J. Derreberry, born 1745, and his wife, Hannah. About 1800, in Burke county, Michael married Mary Elizabeth Derreberry, born in 1783, in Burke county, a daughter of Jacob Derryberry and Christina Barnhardt.
