Francientje was born on 19 July 1635 (Gregorian) to the philosopher, René Descartes, and Helena Jans, a domestic servant of Thomas Sergeant, a bookshop owner.
She was baptized on 28 July (Julian) or 7 August (Gregorian) in Deventer, as the daughter of Reijer Jochems and Helena Jans. Her father had "dutchified" his name: René became Reiner (Reijer), and his father's name Joachim became the patronymic Jochems.
René Descartes had plans to bring his daughter to France and have her educated, but that did not happen: Francine died of scarlet fever at age 5, on 7 September 1640 in Amersfoort.
