Francientje was born on 19 July 1635 (Gregorian) to the philosopher, René Descartes, and Helena Jans, a domestic servant of Thomas Sergeant, a bookshop owner.

She was baptized on 28 July (Julian) or 7 August (Gregorian) in Deventer, as the daughter of Reijer Jochems and Helena Jans. Her father had "dutchified" his name: René became Reiner (Reijer), and his father's name Joachim became the patronymic Jochems[1].

René Descartes had plans to bring his daughter to France and have her educated, but that did not happen: Francine died of scarlet fever at age 5, on 7 September 1640 in Amersfoort.
