Biography

This profile is part of the Nowell Name Study.

Stephen was a farmer and was living in Kennebunkport at the time of the 1830 census, however, the family had moved to Shapleigh by 1840 and to Wakefield, NH by 1850.

They were in Wakefield at the time of the 1860 census and Stephen and Margaret were living with their son Ebenezer at the time of the 1870 census.

Margaret is also listed in the 1880 census as living with her son, however, no death record or burial is found. Stephen is buried in the Dobson Cemetery on the Wildes District Road, however, she doesn’t appear to have been buried there.

Margaret’s parentage remained a mystery for years and was only solved upon looking for her children. In the 1850 census her daughter Betsy is listed as living with Ebenezer and Susanna Garey of Alfred and her son Benjamin was living next door with his uncle Timothy and aunt Mary. So it appears as though Margarite “Gerry” was actually “Garey”. Also, her daughter Edith’s marriage certificate lists her parents as being Stephen Deshon and Margaret Garey born in Alfred. This marriage record has a date of 1859, however, it lists Edith’s age as being 21. From the census reports it appears that Edith was born in 1833 so I suspect that the copy of the marriage record that was sent to the state was in error (unless her age in the marriage license was incorrect!). Margaret’s DOB of 1804 would fit as her being a child of Ebenezer and Susan. There is also the evidence that Stephen and Margaret named a son Ebenezer G., after her father.
