William Wellesley Despard was born in 1798, the eldest son of Reverend Richard Despard of Donore House, Queen's County, and Elizabeth Despard, daughter of William Despard, Esq., of Coolraine. He was a Magistrate and High Sheriff of Queen's County (1841) and Lord of the Manors of Donore and Coolraine.
