Richard Despard was born about 1690, the son of William Despard and Elizabeth Gray (or Croasdaile). He married Miss Elizabeth Cochran, daughter of Richard Cochran of Cuddagh, Queen's. He was High Sherrif of Queen's County in 1727 and inherited his father's iron works at Cranagh.
