Martin Detcheverry was born around 1714 in Guéthary, an ancient town within the diocese of Bayonne, in the province of Labourd - which was the Basque country of southwestern France near the Spanish border (today part of the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques). He was the son of Jean Detcheverry dit Savate and Marie-Anne Du Halle.[1]

The first record found, so far, of Martin's presence in North America, is the account of his wedding in the Parish of Saint-Pierre-du-Nord at Havre Saint-Pierre, on the north side of Île Saint-Jean (today's Canadian province of Prince Edward Island).[2]

For details of his married life & family, see the Wikitree profile of his spouse, Marie-Josèphe Oudy.

Note that he, his wife, and all 9 of their offspring (ages 1 to 20) were caught up in the Expulsion of the Acadians (& the French) from the island in the later part of 1758. This family happened to be aboard one of the ships of exiles that sank shortly before reaching its destination in France. All drowned. No descendants.[3]

  2. He is absent from all 6 of the censuses conducted in this colony from 1728 through 1735. Note that those surveys did not identify the very numerous non-resident seasonal fishers who crossed the Atlantic annually. Martin might have been with one of those fleets. See Library & Archives Canada (LAC) for these census records,
  3. Landry: ID 39913, based on explorations by Stephen A. White re the likely passengers of the doomed ships, for which a key bit of evidence is their absence from lists of persons arriving in England or France.
