Herald-Star, 4 Oct 1899 The People Miss Mary Belle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Devault, living near Mt. Pleasant, and Chester Ashton, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ashton, residing on Glenn's Run, will be married this evening at the home of the bride's parents at 8 o'clock. The ceremony will be performed by Rev. J. T. Morton, pastor of the M. E. Church of Martins Ferry. Then newly wedded couple will commence housekeeping in their new residence on Glenn's Run.
After the death of her husband in 1913, Mary Belle married (1943) his cousin Isaac Newton Ashton, who had been her first boyfriend in high school!
Prominent Couple Wed Wednesday A wedding of unusual interest was solemnized Wednesday evening in Thompson Methodist church in Wheeling, when Mrs. Mary B. Ashton of Steeple Valley, became the bride of Isaac N. Ashton, prominent farmer of Brooke county, West Virginia. They exchanged vows at six o'clock with Rev. King officiating in the presence of a group of relatives and close friends. Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Hodge of Martins Ferry, daughter and son-in-law of the bride, were the only attendants. For her wedding the bride chose a dressmaker suit of soft blue with touches of lace at the neck and wrist lines. Her topcoat was soldier blue, with accessories of black. Her hat was black and adorned with a matching blue plume. Immediately following the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Ashton left for Detroit, Mich, where they will remain until after New Years. Upon their return they will reside at Mr. Ashton's farm near Wellsburg, W. Va.
Martins Ferry Times Leader Monday, May 8, 1967 Mary Belle Ashton Mrs. Mary Belle Ashton, 95, Colerain Pike, Martins Ferry, died Sunday at 1:40 pm in the Martins Ferry Hospital. She was born in Colerain March 11, 1872, the daughter of Mahlon and Matilda Devault. Her husband, J. Chester Ashton, died in 1914. She was a member of the Martins Ferry First Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Lester J., Colerain Pike, Robert H., Buckeye Run; three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Hodge, Martins Ferry, Mrs. Marion Conkel, Steubenville and Mrs. Nellie Schane, San Diego, Calif., one brother, Herman Devault, Colerain Pike; 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Keller Funeral Home, Martins Ferry, after 7 pm tonight. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 pm with Rev. Lynn Garth officiating. Burial will be in Weeks Cemetery, Bridgeport.
