John was born in 1890 he son of Arthur and Bridget Hurley Devlin. He passed away in 1948.

Obit Services for John Matthew Devlin, 58, were held Tuesday morning, May 11, 1948, at St. Agnes church. Rev. Michael Kelly officiated and burial was in St. Agnes cemetery. Mr. Devlin died Sunday morning, May 9, in the Lake Placid General Hospital where he was taken Saturday evening after being stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage.

Born in Jay, New York, he was the son of the late Arthur and Bridget Hurley Devlin. He was a member of the corporation formed in 1920 which purchased the American House and the Ford Agency on Depot St. in Lake Placid. Other members were Thomas and Michael Brennan. In addition the firm operated a horse livery and taxi business from that location. Mr. Devlin was interested in the Ford Agency until 1946.

A member of the Lake Placid Driving Club, Mr. Devlin owned and trained a string of horses which, over a period of years, have been entered in many harness racing events in the east. He was also a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors included a son, Arthur, national ski jumping champion; three brothers, Mark Devlin, of Jay, and Vernon and Hurley Devlin of Lake Placid, and three sisters, Mrs. William Hovey of Lake Placid, Mrs. Ernest Stakes, Galveston, Texas, and Mrs. Mary Braun, Mineola, Long Island.
