In 1881 John was living at 50 Messrs. R Addie & Sons Houses, Shotts with his wife and seven of their children. He was an ironstone miner.[5]
In 1891 John was a widower living at 107 Flat Row, Shotts with four of his children. He was a coal miner.[6]
