John Devlin was born in 1831 in Lanarkshire Scotland. His father was Bernard Devlin. He married Margaret Brown, and together they had 4 children:

In 1851 John was a lodger at 30 Rose Street, Gorbals, Glasgow with the Mckenna family. He was a cotton spinner.^[3]

In 1861 John was lodging at 9 Johnstone's Row, Bathgate with his wife and two children. They were living with the Lappan family. John was a coal miner.^[4]

In 1881 John was living at 50 Messrs. R Addie & Sons Houses, Shotts with his wife and seven of their children. He was an ironstone miner.^[5]

In 1891 John was a widower living at 107 Flat Row, Shotts with four of his children. He was a coal miner.^[6]
