John Dew III was a Carolina colonist.

He married c. 1723 to Elizabeth Bryant, daughter of James Bryant, they had issue.

John was on a list of the Northampton Regiment. He was Captain of a Company of militia, having moved from Meherrin. ^[1]

On 12 Jun 1729 He patented 550 acres. In Bertie County NC. ^[1]

In 11 Mar 1731 he was a witness for his father-in-law James Bryant Sr. Will. ^[2]

On 09 May 1737 John sold property in Bertie County, NC ^[3]

Sold to John Worrill £10 for 250 acres on south side of Meheron River, south side of Kirby Creek at Ready Branch. Wit.: Wm. Ricks, Jacob Ricks, Sarah Stone.

in 05 Sep 1740 John was listed as an heir in his father John Jr.'s Will.^[4]

On 25 May 1741 John purchased property in Bertie County, NC. ^[5]

from John Ganey of Craven County. £36 for 200 acres. Part of a patent formerly granted to Richard Washington on 7 Nov 1723 in Potecasie Woods on Patties Delight. Adjoining Richard Vick. Wit.: Richard Washington, Thomas Garrey, Nathaniel Fields.

John appointed a Justice of the Peace by the Council at Newbern.

20 Jul 1745 Bertie County, NC. ^[1]

John patented another 200 acres.

He moved to Edgecombe Co. before 21 Feb 1758 when he served on a grand jury in the Edgecombe Inferior Court.^[1]

He was widely known and influential. He operated one of the first water mills in the County, it being situated on the road from Tar River. Dew's Mill was mentioned in the Edgecombe Court Feb 23, 1758, Dec 24, 1761 and Jan 11 1765. ^[1]

He wrote a will dated 02 Sep 1749 in Northampton County, NC. ^[6]

In the Name of God Amen, I John Dew of No Carolina in the County of North Hampton Gentleman being weake of body but of sound perfect mind & memory praise be therefore given to Almighty God... first and principally I command my soul unto the hands of Almighty God... my body to be buried at the discretion of my executor hereafter named... touching the disposition of all such Temporal Estates as it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose of as follows, to wit that my debts & Funeral expenses shall be paid & discharged...

item, I give to my son Abraham 200 acres of land on (Potahersy) with all my Joyners Carpenters & Coopers Tools; item, I give to my son John the plantation whereon I now live bounded by Coopers Branch and the Reidy Branch and one Negro fellow named (Nerrow);

item, I give unto my son Arthur 200 acres on the creek between Jacob Ricks and John (Piece of page missing, land is on Coopers Creek);

item, I give to my daughter, (Elizabeth ? ) one cow and calf; item, I give to each of my sons one feather bed and furniture;

item, all the rest of my estate to be divided between my loving children, Abraham, Arthur, John, Sarah Priscilla and Marry and I appoint my loving son, Abraham full & sole executor of my Last Will and Testament and (Benjm Mill) as my (blank) to advise and direct my son.

Death

He died before 1760 when his will was probated in Edgecombe, North Carolina.
