Biography

I was born on a Tuesday, the second child of my parents and the only one with whom my mother went into natural labor. I had an older brother, about four and an half years my senior, and six years after my birth, a younger sister. We lived in Manhattan Beach until I was ten years old. We moved to Huntington Beach that August. It was my very first move and exciting in many ways because I didn't know what to expect.

I am five feet, three and one half inches tall (short), with natural red hair and emerald green eyes. It should be noted I wanted to be blonde and blue-eyed, but those are the breaks, you know?

I have a love of drawing, (people mostly), and have always been interested in tracing my roots. Like many families mine is also broken, inasmuch, as ties have been allowed to lapse. My paternal great-grandfather came here from England and after he passed away in 1905 (Horrible railroad accident — he was a Section Foreman and was smashed between two cars), my great-grandmother refused to have anything to do with his family. I have always known in my heart we had relatives in England. I wanted to know them, and most importantly, wanted them to know I existed. January 2011, I finally met a second cousin, once removed, whose mother was born on the family farm in England, and who bore my maiden name. Curiously enough, Jane's great-grandfather's name is the same as my paternal grandfather. My great-grandfather named his sons after his brothers, one after his father and one after himself.

My paternal grandfather always said we were related to the Sevier family, but in helping my mother create an initial family chart, he didn't know the name of the female Sevier. The Governor, John Sevier, was off to the side of this chart. Grandpa had the information correct about him, with the exception of his having never been married! He did have Female Sevier's father's name as John, which turned out to be correct.

Both of my parents are gone, now. And my older brother, too. He was just twenty-four when he was shot to death on Beach Boulevard in Westminster, on his way to Huntington Beach. He was a Vietnam Vet, too.

I also enjoy writing and hope to be published one day in the traditions sense.

April, i think that we are related through DNA, this is very exciting for me since i have been seaching for my Dudney ancestors roots prior to emigrating to America. My oldest verified ancestor was named Abraham Dudney he was born in Maryland in 1710. I'm curios to know if your tree goes back that far. I have an account on Ancestry as well. I know that the spelling is different but i understand that's pretty common.

Wow, so very nice to 'meet' you. My Tree over on Ancestry goes back (in America) to as early as 1742, when my first Sevier Ancestor arrived in the colonies. I'll have to check on the actual Dewdney side to see how far back it goes in England. My second great-grandfather was Alfred Maurice Dewdney who owned a farm with 18 acres in England. Surrey County. My first Ancestor from this branch who came here was his firstborn, Arthur Dewdney. His path isn't found but by family story. He is said to have landed in Canada and then dropped down into Kansas. He arrived in 1878, which struck me as very interesting, as my very first child and only daughter was born one hundred years later. Plus, Arther and Eda's wedding date is the same as mine. So many coincidences I'm finding. Arther is the first from my Dewdney line. It is interesting that in some of the census records, my own grandfather and his siblings were listed, of course, with their actual surnames, but was spelled the way you spell the name. Which in many ways is closer to the pronunciation. Our spelling trips people up.

Again, so nice to 'meet' you.

Hi April, thank you for your kind welcome to wikitree. I’ve primarily been working on Ancestry and since hitting some information roadblocks there have been seeking other information sources, including here. I’m looking forward to learning my way around here and hopefully plug some data gaps and perhaps help others fill theirs.

You are very welcome, Gary. Sorry, I'm so late in responding. I have been busy driving myself crazy working on three Brick Walls in my tree over at Ancestry.com.

Hi, Jane. So pleased to 'meet' yet another cousin, this time on my late mother's side. Harriet Jarvis is my second great-grandmother. I have for her parents a Jesse Jarvis b. 3 Jun1909 in Maryland. d. 4 Jun 1893 in Barnsville, Belmont, Ohio. He was married to Margaret Ann Henderson b. 10 Dec 1810 in Oxford, Guernsey, Ohio. d. 25 Jul 1896 in Barnsville, Belmont, Ohio. The couple were married on:

The 1850 Census record gives the names of their children:

I have more. Do you have a tree over at Ancestry? That's where my Main tree is. I welcome you to take a waltz through my Public tree: Dewdney/Herring/Sevier Follow my mother's line. Harriet had four sets of twins. My great-grandmother and her twin sister, were the first set and the only same gender set. All were Fraternal twins, which is the more common. Identical are so very rare. Elizabeth Alice Cover known as Lizzie is my great-grandmother. Her twin, Margaret May Cover, was also known as Maggie. My maternal grandmother was Lizzie's youngest of six children. She named my mother Maryalice combining her first name with her mother's middle name into one word. Mom's middle name, as it turns out, was the shortened version of Mom's Paternal grandmother's given name. Guess Grandpa only heard her called that. Oh, well. Makes this search interesting, doesn't it?

At any rate, I have gotten a tad further into this line, but I need to go back and verify things a bit more closely to be certain I have the correct people.

NIce to 'meet' you.

Thanks so much! I will see what to add to profiles in the Jarvis family. I am NOT an ancestry member and truly love the work WikiTreers do. I see that your Harriet Jarvis-4226 has no profile manager and is linked to William Jarvis (might be Jesse's brother). Do consider adopting her and straightening out the sources and parentage! I believe Jesse is son of Mead Jarvis-3247 and Nancy Stocksdale. I have Jesse and Margaret Henderson in another database, but I had not added them to WikiTree without sources.

Hope this is not too much detail. Let's collaborate on this line we have in common. We are 5th cousins once removed. Blessings on our ancestors for finding each other at the right times to make our lives possible. Jane

Your Harriett Jarvis Cover is listed as daughter in Lydia Hinton Jarvis/William Jarvis FindAGrave pages. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/99209279/lydia-jarvis

Jesse Jarvis and Margaret Henderson have three other children listed here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/105973546/jesse-jarvis

I have not checked other sources. Jane

Thank you, Jane. I have a tendency to not trust Find-A-Grave information, without first vetting it. Some kind soul created one for my maternal Grandmother (the only Grandmother I ever knew) but, sadly, they listed her step-father as her father. Had I not known that beforehand, I might have given her the wrong father. Grandma talked about her family all of the time. I spent two weeks of each summer when I was in high school, up with this set of grandparents. She is the one who descends from the Cover/Jarvis marriage. That's when I registered so I could contact the individual and give them the correct information. To their credit, the changes were made. I believe I found the names of Jesse Jarvis' children on census records. None of which had a Lydia listed as his wife. Curious, that. I may have to do a search to see if this Jesse is the correct one. Do you have anything other that f-A-G information to verify Lydia, by chance?

Grandma also spent a great deal of time talking about my Dad's side of the family, to my amazement. Guess she was impressed or something. LOL

Again, thank you for this information. Seems we may be able to 'work together' on this project?

Your Cousin,

April

Hi April, I just pulled up this FamilySearch source list that may help you. It has marriage and death records as well as some census links.

https://www.familysearch.org/service/tree/tree-data/pdf/family-group/LHL9-VG3/spouse/DEFAULT?locale=en

There are TWO daughters named Harriet in this list. I've updated William and Lydia Jarvis's profiles with the list of children and a note that there are inconsistencies.

Jane, your cousin on Jarvis side

Hi, after reading over these comments today, I decided to take a look at my Main tree over at Ancestry. I've seen two other trees who mistakenly list William and Lydia as the parents of my second Great-grandmother. Yet, both also use as a Source record the 1850 U.S. Census record. Surprisingly, those aren't the parents listed. Instead, Jesse Jarvis and his wife, Margaret are listed. Face/palm. I do believe Jesse and Margaret are the correct parents. Mead sounds very familiar to me, too.

Jane, so sorry it took me this long to reply. That's great news to hear, Cousin! I'm afraid I have been working lately on three of my Brick Walls. Unfortunately, they are all on my Dad's side. Hawkins, Arnett and Friend. I will get back to you when I find more on the Jarvis line. My maternal grandmother's side of the family. Great-great grandmother was Harriet Jarvis.

Valentine Sevier was our 7th great grandfather. We're related from him. Where it forks off is you are descended from his son John, and I am descended from his other son Valentine (junior).

It's a curious thing. You enjoy writing, too. I mostly stroke around in the Fantasy genre. What genre(s) do you write in?

posted by Jennifer Fulk
Wherever my passion takes me. I have written a touch of science-fiction, inasmuch as I have written what's considered Fan Fiction for the Original Star Trek series. My latest novel is a story based on the lives of my sixth great-grandparents. Fiction because I can't prove what I believe took place and for the fact that I've written the story (following John's timeline as laid out in the Sevier/Madden "Sevier Family History" 1961) in such a way, adding scenes, to hopefully dispel some rather hurtful "Legend Has It" rumors that still abound. If I haven't mentioned this already my own line of descent is amusing to me. The first John Sevier (as he Anglicized his name) to Valentine Sevier (known as the Immigrant) to John Sevier, to Valentine Sevier (fourth son, seventh child) to John Sevier. This is where we lose the Sevier surname, as it was this John's daughter, Helen Ellender Sevier who married Daniel Washington Herring. I didn't have her first name, nor the name of Herring when I began my research. I didn't adopt the Sevier family right away, as a family story is just that until you can 'prove' it. Once I made the connection, it was still problematic, as no children by name were listed in the 1830 census record. Took the Registrar of my local D.A.R. Chapter to help me solve this problem. Found a Probate case that listed his children by name (married and deceased, as well.) There she was. Yay. Have you been to any of the Sevier Family Reunions? I went to my very first one in 2018. 2020's was postponed, and I do believe they've postponed again. Here's hoping for 2023.

Ah! I'm a Trekkie, too! I was young when I first started watching it, but life happened and I only got to re-start watching it again a few years ago (thank Netflix). We got to near the end of The Next Generation, but life happened again, and now we don't have Netflix (at least for now; not much to watch for $10-ish a month anyway). Funny thing, I barely remember watching it as a kid, but I remember loving Data (Still do!).

That's great you were able to crack the code to finding more family info. I once lost a 3rd cousin to cancer (my mom's father's side), and it hit me hard how I never got to meet her and only learned about her existence a month before she died. I felt hurt, sad, and angry over never having been told, so I developed a yearning to find more cousins I haven't met or heard of. That's what ultimately brought me here to WikiTree. So far, I found plenty died around 2015, so it's too late for them, but at least I've found 13, including you. I've contacted 3, and 1 hasn't responded. That one's a bummer, because she's the only one born in the 1990s like me. But it doesn't matter too much. I hang out best with people a bit older than me. (Okay, that's an understatement. I once had a 70-something friend when I was 9. Lol)

I haven't, but when my grandma and an aunt did research and was sent a copy of an old invitation, I read about how the guys of the family would trek miles up a trail to the hill where a battle took place and shout a somewhat corny war cry. I'd love to find out if they could plan on having it virtual. I'm all the way up here near Seattle, WA.

Hubby and I are in Utah. We used to live in Southern CA, then moved here almost 14 years ago. Job transfer. It took us four days to drive to Greeneville, TN where the 2018 Reunion was held. I also have friends that are quite a bit older than me. I have come to realize age doesn't matter. It's just a number. You either share some commonality with others, or you don't. Sometimes, I will just 'click' with another soul, that sort of thing. I have to say, I used to be dreadfully shy when I was younger. As I've gotten older, I'm no longer as shy. In fact, when I met our family at the Reunion, I felt immediately a part of them. Hard to explain, maybe the family ties are stronger than we know? I felt the same closeness with a second cousin, once removed, the first extended family member on my Dad's side I connected with. At first online, but her dream came true and she was able to come Stateside. She was born in England, (her mother on the Dewdney farm, in fact) but in her high school years her father fell in love with Norway and moved his family there. She still resides in Norway. Yet, we clicked. I have another cousin I met in person, too. She's the great-granddaughter of my great-grandmother's twin sister! Can't get closer than that, eh? Then, I had the pleasure of chatting for hours on the phone with another second cousin, once removed. She descends from my paternal grandfather's older half-sister. So glad we had the chance to meet in person. She's since suffered a stroke and, although she survived, now suffers from aphasia. Communicating is difficult. My email is [email address removed] so we can keep in touch. I love meeting family. My parents are both gone and I only have one surviving sibling. I need family so that I don't feel so alone. :)

Hi April

Thank you for your thank you's! Are you related to Phebe Ann (Hawkins-5646) Skidmore? She is my 2X great grandmother.

posted by Jennifer Lapham
Sorry, this is very late. I don't know if Phebe Ann Hawkins is related to my 7th great-grandfather, Joseph Hawkins. Some think his parents were John Hawkins (1680-1740) and Mary Long, his wife. This couple DID have a son named Joseph, but he died 30 Mar 1769 in Spotsylvania, VA, whereas mine deceased on 28 Sep 1770 near Mount Jackson, Frederick County, VA. There are a great many Joseph Hawkins out there, it's hard to separate them.

Sorry for the delay. I haven't been over here recently. I'm related to an Elizabeth Hawkins, not sure if this is mine without looking it up. Joseph and Sarah Hawkins are my 7th great grandparents and there are so very many Hawkinses out there. Hard to know. I don't wish to take on any more profiles than I can handle at the moment.

Hello April, I see that you are interested in the Hawkins family of Rhode Island. My great great great grand mother is Hannah Hawkins Taylor of Rhode Island ( 1787-1850). I looked for years for them. How wonderful to find a lady with a family Bible and names written on the inside cover. Never give up ! Sandy Taylor Franklin
Actually, it's the Hawkins from Virginia that is my line. Sarah Hawkins, (1746-1780) is my sixth great-grandmother married to John Sevier (1745-1815). Her father is one of the very many Joseph Hawkinses and sorting them out is a nightmare.

Hi April, Thanks for adding profiles to WikiTree.

Please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well - if you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info.

Here is what our Sources help page says. It has lots of ideas: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources

The Sources Style Guide shows how to enter sources in the biography.

This page describes sources and how to enter sources and is a favorite, Jilaine’s Dream Sources Help Page.

Hello, Rob,

No, I'm afraid I really haven't made any headway on my Friend line. My Hawkins line suddenly blew up in my face. Trying to put out as many fires as I can, but it's been hectic. My Joseph Friend married his wife, Elender "Elon" Matteson down in Wilkes County, North Carolina. I'm uncertain he was of the Maryland line of Friends.
